STEAM Projects with MinecraftEdu
Minecraft from an educational game to an experimental learning platform!
Since games basically exist as a means of entertainment, many experts approach the inclusion of games in education with prejudice. However, in many studies, games cause positive effects on many variables such as learning performance, learning motivation and learning persistence. For this reason, games have started to take place more in education with an increasing momentum. Accordingly, more educational games are also being released. One of these educational games is MinecraftEdu, an educational version of Minecraft, which is a very popular game all over the world, developed by Microsoft together with Mojang company.
Although it looks like a digital game, Minecraft can be used as an educational game or experiment environment. Like many technological tools, the Minecraft game is also used by educators in the educational environment. With the adaptation of Minecraft to the educational environment, its name was changed to Minecraft Education Edition. In MinecraftEdu, students will both play games and experience 21st century skills. MinecraftEdu is becoming one of the most important digital environments where we can provide students with the skills of collaborative learning and teamwork, which are 21st century skills. In MinecraftEdu, which reaches more and more audiences every day, students can work with each other to build their own worlds, develop their projects, and find solutions to daily life problems. As students combine their construction processes in Minecraft with mathematics, geometry, physics knowledge and coding skills, a significant contribution is made to the development of their 3-dimensional thinking, spatial thinking, and algorithmic thinking skills. Therefore, we see that MinecraftEdu has a side that improves students' engineering skills. In addition to all these, students will embody abstract concepts that are difficult to learn in MinecraftEdu, and will perform difficult experiments as if they were playing. In this way, students will learn by doing and experiencing with their friends under the guidance of a teacher or educator or through peer education.
